abstract = "Sugarcane crop cultivation has been largely expanded during the
last few years in Brazil in order to meet the increasing ethanol
production demand. The sustainable ethanol production is directly
linked to an important land use cover change issue. Therefore, it
is relevant to know the land use cover prior to the sugarcane
cultivation. In this context, the present work has the objective
to use remote sensing images to evaluate the direct land use cover
change to sugarcane in the South-Central region of Brazil, during
the crop years of 2007/08 and 2008/09. Five land use classes were
defined and identified through visual image interpretation on the
computer screen. For the crop year 2006/07 the greatest sugarcane
expansion occurred in S{\~a}o Paulo and Minas Gerais states
(636.8 and 120.3 thousand ha, respectively) with most changes
observed over the pasture class (50.4%) in S{\~a}o Paulo State
and over the agriculture class (78.0%) in Minas Gerais State. Form
the crop year 2008/09 the greatest sugarcane expansion occurred in
S{\~a}o Paulo (661.9 thousand ha) and Goi{\'a}s (143.1 thousand
ha). Over the two analyzed years a total of 991.0 thousand ha of
pasture and 1.15 million ha of agricultural crops were changed to
sugarcane in the South-Central region of Brazil. From this work it
can be concluded that the systematic acquired remote sensing
images by the Landsat and CBERS satellites allowed identify the
land use classes directly changed to sugarcane during the recent
and fast sugarcane cultivation expansion.",
